Students have many skills that they need to develop. For this reason, they must have the best tools at their fingertips so they can be successful in their endeavors. For example, a dictionary can help your child with spelling, grammar, vocabulary, etc. Still, they need to use it correctly for it to be an effective learning tool. Teach your child how to use a dictionary with the tips in the post below.

How to Use a Dictionary to Learn

  1. First, repeat the ABCs with your child. They need to be familiar with the alphabet so that they can search words in the dictionary successfully.
  2. You should also provide your child with a suitable dictionary. There are many types to choose from (legal, medical, translation, etc.), so ensure they have an updated, pocket-sized English dictionary.
  3. It's a great idea to spend some time with your child to teach them the different parts of a dictionary. Teach them about the thesaurus, part of speech, pronunciation keys, and more.
  4. Of course, you should help them search for unfamiliar words. Teach them to find the first letter of the unknown word and find that section in the dictionary. Then, the guide words at the top will get them to the right place.
  5. Finally, work on understanding the word's meaning. If your child doesn't understand the definition, help them or encourage them to search the dictionary for unknown terms in the definition.
